Cracks

Teeth with cracks show various symptoms, including pain while chewing and/or increased sensitivity to hot/cold. Cracks can allow bacteria to infect the tooth's interior, making a root canal treatment necessary.

Types of cracks:

Hairline cracks

These tiny cracks only superficially damage the enamel. They occur frequently but usually show no symptoms.

Broken cusps

If a cusp becomes weak, it can lead to a crack. A broken cusp rarely damages the pulp, so a root canal treatment is not necessary. Your dentist will likely recommend a crown.

The crack extends from the chewing surface to or below the gum level. A root canal treatment is necessary to preserve the tooth.

Split tooth

This cannot always be saved; after a root canal treatment, it must be further restored with a post and crown. The extent of the split determines the final treatment.

Vertical root fracture

This fracture starts in the root and extends toward the chewing surface. Unfortunately, these teeth show very few symptoms. Treatment always involves surgical intervention to save part of the tooth.
