In 90% of all endodontic treatments, the tooth can be restored through a normal procedure. However, sometimes even with a revision, the root canal cannot be completely cleaned of bacteria and necrotic tissue, resulting in an inflammatory reaction, usually at the root tip of the tooth. In such cases, we will recommend a root-end resection to prevent an infection.
Endodontic surgery is also used to make cracks or invisible canals visible, which cannot be seen on X-rays. Damaged root surfaces or surrounding tissue are treated using this method. However, the most common procedure is the root-end resection.
What is a root-end resection?
The animation on the left simplifies the treatment. An incision is made in the mucosa. The inflamed tissue and the root tip are removed. A filling is placed at the tip to prevent re-infection, and finally, the mucosa is sutured. The bone tissue regenerates once a permanent seal between the tooth and the bone tissue has been created through the procedure. Permanent regeneration of the tooth can be achieved in 80% of cases with this method.
